# The arch of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge forms a parabola with equation y = -0.016(x - 52.5)? + 45 where r is the horizontal distance (in meters) from the arch's left end and y is the distance (in meters) from the base of the arch. What is the width of the arch?

Answered by an experienced expert Nitin Arora

for width of the arch put y  =  0

y = -0.016(x - 52.5)^2 + 45  = 0

This means -0.016(x-52.5)^2 = -45

(x-52.5)^2 = 45/0.016 = 2812.5

x-52.5 = +53  or x - 52.5 = - 53

x =  105.5   or    x  = -0.5

Therefore the width = 105.5 + 0.5 = 106
