Answered by an experienced expert Bibin P B

Gneiss is a coarse to medium grained banded metamorphic rock generated during regional metamorphism from igneous or sedimentary rocks.

Gneisses contain feldspars, quartz, mica minerals, and aluminous or ferromagnesian silicates in addition to feldspars and quartz.

Mineralogy: light coloured bands are formed by felsic minerals such as feldspar (orthoclase, plagioclase) and quartz; dark coloured bands are formed by mafic minerals such as biotite, pyroxene (augite), and amphibole (hornblende); garnet porphyroblasts are prevalent.
