I fixed it up a bit, but I didn't make all of it into my own words because I assume that it's original and yours, which would be alright. Otherwise, great essay!

We’ve all been there -- you’re watching someone play video games, watching the colorful pixelated screen as the monitor produces erratic and bubbly sounds. It could be your sibling, a friend, or maybe even you’re playing the games. Video games have always united and brought people together worldwide and globally, even since the age of humans when we were playing with rocks. But, let’s ask ourselves -- what are the positives and downsides of video games?

About 60% of Americans play video games daily. That’s a whopping 196.32 million! Not only have studies proven that video games increase children's self-confidence and self-esteem, but also teaches important skills and addresses serious issues which are a key part of letting children understand the world around them and applying that knowledge into real-world situations. But, it’s not all rainbows and sunshine… unfortunately there’s some downsides to video gaming.

Playing violent video games is linked to aggressive behavior and thoughts. It’s easily blamed by the media and some experts as the reason why some gamers become violent and portray extreme anti-social behavior. Apparently, video games can even kill brain cells and interrupt a person's sleep, interrupting their internal clock. Studies show that people playing "shooter games" damages the hippocampus area of their brain. Of course, there are some benefits of playing video games, but there are also many negative impacts, especially on today’s millennials.

According to NPD, 91% of children from the age of two to seventeen play video games (Camp, 2011). Just 3 or more hours of video gaming can cause health issues, including some vision issues. While playing video games for short periods (1 hour or so) does have its benefits, playing for more than 3 hours can cause computer eye syndrome, eye pain, issues with focusing, and even headaches. Video game addiction, like alcohol and drug addiction, is an impulse disorder. Gamers rely on their ability to play video games at all times. If they are unable to get their "fix," they start to experience irritability and aggression. Rather than relying on a substance, gamers rely on the fantasy world that gaming provides to escape their own reality. But, there’s still some good in video gaming!

There are many cognitive skills you can learn from gaming, such as quick thinking, processing information quickly, and the skill to think about a number of things, all at the same time! Pretty amazing, right? Players are able to communicate with each other all the discoveries, struggles and achievements they have obtained with friends, and teach children the value of teamwork and being a part of something larger than themselves. Sometimes it’s better to learn young -- gaming at a young age can help develop critical thinking skills. In other words, kids who pay attention to a string of events in a video game are very likely to apply this to their real lives later on. While it can be hard as parents to look beyond the day-to-day struggles with gaming kids, it’s helpful to hear about the potential upsides. These positive effects of gaming break down into three basic psychological needs young people have, which researchers refer to as competence, autonomy, and relatedness. But not only that, video games can also boost you physcologically too. Video games have also been seen as a great help for children who are suffering with psychological problems such as inferiority complex and lack of self-confidence, according to some gamers.

Believe it or not, video games have some history all the way back to the 1930’s when the first coin operated entertainment was invented. They were played on massive computers connected to vector displays, not analog televisions. Ralph H. Baer conceived the idea of a home video game in 1951. The early 1970s saw the advent of personal computers, and then mass-produced gaming consoles to become a reality. Some of the first “violent” video games included “Mortal Kombat”, “Street Fighter”, and “Wolfenstein 3D”, which had amazing effects that were top notch at the time. Since then, every decade video games have become more violent in nature with strong language and similar to society today. Since the 1980s, video gaming has become a popular form of entertainment, and a part of modern popular culture in most parts of the world. However, the first game system designed for commercial home use did not emerge until nearly three decades later, when Ralph Baer and his team released his prototype, the “Brown Box,” in 1967. The “Brown Box” was a vacuum tube-circuit that could be connected to a television set and allowed two users to control cubes that chased each other on the screen.

Now it’s up to you to decide whether video games have more downsides or positives. Otherwise, keep gaming!
