Go to https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/energy-skate-park/latest/energy-skate-park_en.html
1. Click the “Energy” box on the top left to view the changes in PE, KE and thermal energy.
2. Check the boxes for grid and reference height at the bottom left.
3. Check all of the boxes at the top right corner of the simulation including: Pie Chart, Grid, and
Speed.
4. Choose stick to track, none for friction, tiny for gravity, 100kg for mass.
5. Move the skateboarder to the top (maximum height, 6 meters) of one side of the skate
ramp. Release the skateboarder.
6. Spend a few minutes to make sure you understand how potential energy, kinetic energy,
and speed are affected during the simulation. You can pause the simulation, use the slow play button if you need to.
Question 1a: How high does the skater move as the skater goes back and forth from one side of the ramp to the other ?
2. Will the skater fall off the ramp when released at the maximum height of the ramp? Why or why not ?
3. Describe two different ways to increase the total energy in the system in this simulation?
4. As the skateboarder goes back and forth on the ramp, how does thermal energy change?
Create the skate paths as shown. Play the simulation with no friction and then with lots of friction.
Question 2
If the skater starts on the left side on a frictionless track, will the skater have enough energy to make it all the way to the right side? Why?
Question 3
If the skater starts on the left side on a track with friction, will the skater have enough energy to make it all the way to the right side? Why?
