So, according to the question, 

Number of dimes = 2x

Number of nickels = x

Number of penny = 1

Total number of coins = 9

Thus, 

x + 2x + x + 1 = 9

4x = 8

Now, we know that :

1 dime = $0.10

1 quarter = $0.25

1 nickel = $0.05

1 penny = $0.01

Thus, total money Matthew has = 2x($0.10) + x($0.25) + x($0.05) + 1($0.01) 

Putting value of x, 

Total money = 4($0.10) + 2($0.25) + 2($0.05) + 1($0.01) 

= $(0.40 + 0.50 + 0.10 + 0.01) 

= $1.01
